Q: What qualifications do I need to apply to become a Driving Instructor?
A: No formal qualifications are required, however you must satisfy the DSA (Driving standards agency) with certain legal requirements. These are;(1) you must have held a full British or European licence for a least 3 1/2 years prior to applying to be an ADI.(2) be a fit and proper person,ie, have no criminal convictions unless they are spent, (3) you must be able to read a car number plate(if plate issued before 1st september 2001) 27.5 metres,(if after 1st september 2001) 26.5 metres in good daylight with the help of glasses/contact lenses if worn,(4) pass all 3 register qualifying exams.

Q: How many exams will I have to take?
A: There are 3 exams. part 1(theory test), part 2(practical driving ability test), part 3(practical instruction ability test)

Q: How much are the exams?
A: Theory test £50.00, practical driving ability test £82.00, practical instructional ability test £82.00.

Q: How long will I have to complete all the exams?
A: You must complete the exams in order ie; part 1, part 2 then part 3 you will have 2 years to complete all 3 exams from the date you past part 1.

Q: How much could I earn as a Driving Instructor?
A: The average lesson price is £19.00 per hour, so, if you work 20 hours, earnings are £380.00 gross, or 40 hours, earnings are £760.00 gross.

Q: How long will I be training for?
A: The part 1 is home based learning theory plus 6 hours of practical in-car sessions. The practical driving training is 15 hours, and, for the practical instruction training 50 hours. The waiting times for exam appointments varies from one test centre to the other, but, is usually between 2 and 6 week waiting time between applying and taking the exam. The training period is usually between 6 & 12 months.
